In 2007, I worked on the Democracy Taskforce that recommended to both the Prime Minister and David Cameron that the expenses system needed a total overhaul. David Cameron accepted our recommendations; there was a silence from Gordon Brown. I am not in Parliament and as a result have never benefited from the discredited system, but I have always known that the expense regime was iniquitous and needed radical change.
The public has been rightly horrified and furious at the revelations. Total reform is not coming soon enough. If I am fortunate enough to be elected by the residents of South Thanet and Sandwich, then I make this pledge to all constituents. I will campaign to end privileged pensions for MPs.
